Ján Koniarek Gallery in Trnava prepared in summer months of 2011 an exhibition of drawings and collages of a significant Slovak literary scientist, archeologist, exhibition curator and an artist Oskár Čepan coming from the village of Cífer where he was born on 27 February 1925. Oskár Čepan died in Bratislava on 3 September 1992 at the age of sixty.
Revelatory anniversary exhibition of an artist Oskár Čepan accompanied with a catalogue and an anthology held in our gallery in 2005 surprisingly revealed to the public artistic works in fact absolutely unknown until then, intentionally geometrically and surrealistically oriented and rare at that time in Slovak conditions.
The presented collection of Čepan’s collages and drawings comes from the collections of Ján Koniarek Gallery in Trnava. It is the first time when the works are presented individually as a cycle, 209 works in total.
The whole artistic work by Čepan was originated in opposition against an epochal official artistic scene of a communist regime with its socialistic realism doctrine and it was dignified and significant contribution to the development of our then non-official art of abstract geometric drawing and collage inspired by surrealism.
First Oscar Čepan‘s collages were created in the half of the 40’s to continue in the second half of the 50’s and at the beginning of the 60’s using fragments of historical photographs with a surprising return in the 80’s with a literary topic of common compositions of significant litterateurs and scientists.
Geometric sketches by Oscar Čepan emerging at that time have predominantly an intimate character of sketchbook sheets, however, they excel in a thorough usage of a geometric language of shapes using a technique of a strict pencil drawing and pastel aquarelle drawing. His drawings amaze by its subtleness, discipline of variations of geometric shapes, lines and surfaces used.
The essential collection of Čepan’s geometric drawings and surrealistic collages is complemented by some preserved landscape compositions inspired by his stay in an open air characteristic by colour sensitivity without closer descriptiveness of a selected landscapes subject among which there is also a motif of Trnava.
The exhibition of Čepan’s artistic works will continue until 30 September 2011.
