Čemický Ladislav

*24 March 1909, Čemice – †6 January 2000, Stupava

Painter, national artist, professor, first chairman of the National Headquarter of the Union of Czechoslovak Artists. At first he was taught by Zoltán Palugyay. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Budapest (prof. Csóka). In the thirties he was on several scholarships and study stays in Western Europe. The most important of them was a stay in Paris in the years 1935 - 1936 and 1938. Here he often met with Pablo Picasso and other artists of so-called the Paris School. Stay in Paris brought into his creation “civilizmus” and interest in social issues and urban periphery. The top of his creation reached at the end of the thirties. Personable understanding of social painting was deepening in artist´s work. He took themes from the workers colonies and workers work. His favourite themes were workers, the legend of Jánošík´s death, portraits of representatives of Slovak culture and friends and landscapes from Central Slovakia and Liptov. His artistic expression became significant in drawing and pastel. Convincingly sounds his deeply heart-felt attitude to man and society in which he lived and worked. The centre of his painting is in a portrait and figural composition. Averse to bias in allegorising emerged in portraits and self-portraits. His artistic craftsmanship expressed, more significantly, in watercolour, in which he reached the European level. He was a member of the Group of Artists of 29th August. In the years 1949 – 1976 he taught at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava. Individually exhibited in Liptovský Mikuláš, Košice, Bratislava. He exhibited also abroad (e.g. Moscow, Sofia, Budapest, Berlin).
