Benka Martin

*1888, Kostolište – † 1971, Malacky

Slovak artist, graphic, illustrator, art pedagogue and Esperanto speaker. Founder of modern Slovak expression in painting and drawing. He occupied himself by several branches of creation – e.g. music, playing on a violin, making tapestries, stage design. He created 13 violins which are situated in the Martin Benka Museum in Martin. In the field of book design and typography Benka created many interesting experimental fonts and design layout of books influenced by cubistic idea. His painting program was stimulated by knowledge of Orava nature. In 1945 in Martin he founded with painters Karol Ondreička, Emil Makovický and sculptor Fraňo Štefunko art association Trojštít which had a conservative character. Its aim was to connect different types of art.
