Significant Slovak realistic artist, restorer and pedagogue. He studied at a high school for training teachers of drawing and geometry in Budapest, later at a private school in Munich and since 1892 at the Royal Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts (prof. Gabriel von Hackl, Franz von Defregger and Karol Marr). In 1920 he became a co-founder of Association of Slovak artists in Martin. His realistic paintings ended in a social-critical orientation. Jozef Hanula concentrated on portrait, figural studies and also book design.
