Medvecká Mária

*11 October 1914, Medvedzie – †23 April 1987, Bratislava

Painter, the first national artist of Slovak painting, representative of realistic orientation of Slovak creative development of 20th century. She graduated at the Academy of Education in Bratislava and in the years 1942 – 1945 she studied at the Department of Drawing and Painting of the Slovak Technical University in Bratislava. She came out of critical realism traditions, after the year 1948 she became the first representative of new, sometimes also politically motivated tendencies. She preferred the technique of oil-painting. Figural works dominated in her creation. Medvecká creation is characterised by significant manuscript, dominance of warm earthly tones and rotation of intimate and monumental motives. In the sixties of 20th century her creation reached the peak in works in which she expressed to fundamental questions of human existence, truth and happiness through landscape studies. She also devoted to drawing and illustration. New views on the beauty of Orava country and her people brought her an appreciation at home and international exhibitions.
