Maľba č. 9, 1965, oil on canvas

Jarmila Cihankova (born in 1925) is known on the Slovak art scene for her paintings, drawings, graphic works, three-dimensional objects and since late 1960’s also for her textile works: nonwoven tapestry (art protis and its modifications) as well as woven tapestry. Her contribution to the Slovak art scene is also viewed in the light of her teaching at the Secondary School of Applied Arts in Bratislava and at the Department of Stage Setting at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava.

Visitors to Galeria Jana Koniarka have the opportunity to view varied work of the artist, including some of her lesser known works selected by Luba Belohradska, curator of the exhibition. The artist lives and works in Trnava region, is a co-founder of the Club of Concretists in Slovakia and is known for broadening geometric vocabulary into textile art production. We now have the opportunity to exhibit her works in originals and thanks to civic association And Gallery also some prints from slides and photographs depicting her no longer existing works. Her contribution to Slovak arts has not yet been sufficiently appreciated. The current exhibition in collaboration with Slovenska sporitelna, a.s. finally shows long deserved representative selection of work of Jarmila Cihankova.

The artist spent 1950’s working with caricatures, politic drawings and works in graphics. Early in 1960’s she became interested in painting (and was a member of Group 4 – comprised of Olga Bartosikova, Jarmila Cihankova, Tamara Klimová, Viera Kraicova). Jarmila Cihankova belongs to protagonists of tendencies in new constructivism in the Slovak art, these starting in the early 1960’s. She is a founder member of the Club of the Concretists in Slovakia and she is also known for applying a reductivist geometry in works in textile – art protis. Her top work is a ten-part Huge Set of Blocks (environment) exhibited at the 5th Biennial of tapestry in Lausanne, Switzerland in 1971. Variety and repeating of simple geometric shapes, sense of rythm as regards the composition and using bright colours for her paintings and works in textile suggest the artist‘s inspiration in folklore.
