SUPERNOVA, an exhibition project curated by Caroline Douglas presents 14 British artists of the middle and younger generation. These artists try to redefine modernism and its visual culture primarily in architecture, but also in purism and geometric abstraction. Supernova phenomenon is the death explosion of a massive star, resulting in a sharp increase in brightness followed by a gradual fading. The title of the exhibition in this case refers to some “failure” of Modernism and its transformation from the viewpoint of the artists of the younger generation.
Works of the protagonists deliberately relate to those of pioneers of modernism (such as Victor Pasmore, Le Corbusier, Ben Nicolson, Piet Mondrian and others). In terms of programme, the artists presented at this exhibition elaborate the visual language of the pioneers of modernism, but detached and ironic, they keep their distance. At this exhibition are various mediums represented, for instance: large geometric compositions by Gary Hume, Sarah Morris or Toby Ziegler, architectural aluminium and plexiglass object by Liam Gillick, video by Jane and Louise Wislon and Haluk Akakce or computer animations by Dan Norton.
From the 1990’s on, Galéria Jána Koniarka in Trnava focuses on presenting contemporary tendencies in visual arts in international context. This is why the Supernova project fits perfectly in our exhibition concept. In addition to this, it is also a rare but welcomed opportunity for Slovak art community and those who are interested to come into contact with contemporary tendencies in British art (the exhibition is accompanied by a comprehensive catalogue displaying the exhibited works in 56 pages). Very important part of the project is also the programme of education activities for elementary and secondary schools giving the opportunity of direct confrontation of the practice of art making.
