Within the monitoring of contemporary painting in Slovakia, the Jan Koniarek Gallery in Trnava pre-sents an individual exhibition by Bohdan Hostiňák, a remarkable personality of middle-aged generation not only in Slovakia, but also within the Central Europe. The author was born in 1968 in Svidnik and graduated at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava (1991-1997) where he still lives and works.

The exhibition represents the author’s works throughout the last decade (1999-2010) with the focus on neo-classical painting stream. Hostiňák affected by home landscape, icon painting and the European tradi-tion of a painted image creates a harmonic and stoic world of own figural pictures. However, they are not the paintworks representing illusive and realistic painting- they represent a symbolic picture language where the artist uses his own language of iconic signs and symbols. Originally, there were blood motives, struggle and fight of the contrasts followed by all-hugging fires, lightings and volcanoes. In the recent period the painter has developed in parallel several painting cycles which bring ideal landscapes referring to the search for lost paradise, to the atmosphere of Vergilian pasture lands of Arcadia or pagan hallowed groves. The author has created a series of canvas with a motive of vast lands and forest sceneries. They are usually idyllic landscapes with a low horizon captured in the night in a negative form or pensive atmosphere of the twilight (The Arcadia, 1999; the Melancholy, 2002; In the Forrest 2005). Bathing scenes represent the second cycle of the paintings – in the amphitheatre of the nature appearing women acts chiming with a tranquil setting of the country and a quiet flow of water levels (In the Water, 2000; Bathing, 2002). In his latest series of works Hostiňák brings a topic of reading figures in the middle of virgin nature. Sharp colouring and firm modelling of shapes creates monu-mental harmonic lands where male or female figures with a Greek profile are sitting under the mythical tree among open books (I Turned My Back to the World, 2004-2005; Love to Wisdom, 2009-10). The author has cre-ated such an introvert world of thoughts where the figure in front of the fire is absorbed by the study and at the same time it refers to the beginnings of the philosophy. Then according to the author, the fire represents a “symbolic sign of human mind brightness” (The Philosophical Study, 2004).
The Hostiňák’s Poussin-like picture gardens full of melancholy thus represent a necessary counter-weight to the acceleration and superficiality of a massmedia world.
Jan Koniarek Gallery in Trnava presents the first individual exhibition by Bohdan Hostiňák after four years (the last one took place in 2006 - The Arcadia Paintings; together with Jan Knap, Medium Gallery Brati-slava). The exhibition preview takes place within the program of the international symposium “Painting in the Contexts, the Contexts of Painting” organized by the Research Centre of the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in the Slovak National Gallery in Bratislava from 21st to 22nd October 2010.
