The exhibition project entitled Silence by a young Slovak artist Ingrid Višňovská (1978) is a continuation of her program development of spatial art forms. Since her studies at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design she has been preferring sculpture thinking based on dematerialization, on utilization of new Technologies and unconventional physical and creative means (laser, light, acoustic bodies, heat, kinetics, UV light etc.). She makes integrated installations, spatial situations where the spectator is mostly an interactive part of the art work.
This Trnava exhibition presents a full-area installation where a mass of eyes levitate on transparent foils. Otherwise invisible eyes, illuminated by UV light, create a powerful mysterious atmosphere in the complete darkness of the premises. Walking through the installation spectator can gradually become absorbed in the mysterious environment of floating eyes and the story of own associations.
Spectator falls into the mass, crowd, forest of eyes that is surrounding, he can see and he is seen, he watches and he is watched, he literally stands „vis-a-vis“ the art. The author creates saturated environment at the edge between reality and imagination, uncertainty, fear and elevation, clash of an individual and a silent crown – constantly being watched by author´s eyes.
There are many examples of working with eye details in modern art: from the dream flotation of eye – balloon by the symbolist O. Redon, through surrealistic cutting of the eye with blade in the movie An Andalusian Dog, up to omnipresent eyes of Orwell´s Big Brother. The author previously worked with this element – e.g. floating eye projected onto the disappearing sprinkle steam (Eye, 2007), or previous presentations of Silence (Bratislava 2008, Prague 2009).
