• He was born on 12 September 1948 in Sereď. As a small child he fell ill with polio resulting in a lifetime severe disablement. Between 1956 and 1965 he attended the Elementary School for Disabled in Bratislava. After graduating from the Secondary General Educational School in Trnava (1969) from 1970 to 1976 he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava under Professor Jozef Chovan.
• In 1979 he participated in generation exhibition Poster and Graphic Design in Galéria mladých (Youth Gallery) in Bratislava where he established himself as a significant poster creator.
• In 1980 he participated in the International Poster Biennial in Warsaw and received honorable mention in the thematic contest, thus introducing himself to the international poster scene. He took part in the worldęs major poster shows – if his health allowed him – till the end of his life. It should be emphasized that they were selective shows and just few Slovak artists participated in them as often as Jozef Dóka jr.
• He showed his work at the Applied Graphics Biennial in Brno ((1982, 1986, 1990, 1994, 1998) where he won prizes in 1982 and 1986. He also exhibited at the International Poster Biennial in Lahti, Finland (1981, 1983, 1987), International Poster Exhibition in Fort Collins (1983, 1991), Poster Triennial in Toyama, Japan (1983). He had a collection of posters in touring exhibition Contemporary Czechoslovak Posters that toured through American cities Raleigh, New York, Champaign – Urbana, Rochester, Chicago, Kansas City, Sarasota and Philadelphia.
• His posters were exhibited in other representative selections of both local and foreign curators in Zurich (Switzerland), in Fort Collins in the American Colorado, Karlsruhe, Slovak National Gallery in Bratislava, in Krakow (Poland), Dortmund (Germany), in Piešťany, Budapest, Vienna, Rzeszow (Poland), in Danish cities of Odense, Aarhus and Kolding, etc.
• Furthermore, he had solo exhibitions in Trnava, Jaslovské Bohunice, Sofia and Varna in Bulgaria, in Modra – Harmónia, Bratislava and Paris.
• In 1976 he created the brand of the Ján Koniarek Gallery and since then he cooperated with the Gallery and in 1991 he was appointed to the Galleryęs Board. In the late 1970s he started he began to cooperate with the Trnava Theatre.
• He won the competition for brands of the Slovak post (1993), Slovak Chamber of Architects (1993) and Slovak Philharmonic (1995).
• In 1982 he presented the management of the Ján Koniarek Gallery with the statute of periodical international competitive show of world posters. Since comrades slightly altered the idea and suggested the competition of political posters of socialist countries, Dóka decided not to proceed further. In 1990 he returned to this idea and together with Dušan Junek he initiated the international exhibition Trnava Poster Triennial. In 1991 he became Chairman of the Organizing Committee of the Trnava Poster Triennial. He was a member of the International Jury of the 1st Trnava Poster Triennial. He created the brand of the Trnava Poster Triennial and the visual style of its first nationwide year. In 1997, together with the co-author Zuzana Nádaská, in the daily SME he presented the architectonic idea entitled New Trnava Tower of Glass – Futuristic Vision 2001. In 1999 he became an honorary chairman of the Organizing Committee of the Trnava Poster Triennial and held the post till his death.
• In 2007 he fell seriously ill and undergone a difficult
surgery. He refused chemotherapy.
He died on 14 November 2011 in Trnava hospital.
