On the occasion of author´s jubilee a retrospective survey of the artist´s work became topical. For almost three decades Juraj Dolán helps to create contemporary art scene in Slovakia and he actively intervenes mainly in the non-conventional field of transgressing the media and making untraditional combinations. His work is fairly extensive and multilayered in terms of forms. Motifs and themes he works with appear in paintings, reliefs, objects, installations and performances. In his work he involves a wide range of means of expression, such as colors, space, movement, sound, light, water and other media. Application and integration of different elements in the work of art uses associativeness and symbolism of contrast meetings with Dadaistic flavor. He places real objects in positions that they do not appertain to; he does so in order to emphasize the absurdity of their existence, use and consequences.
In his spatial installations Juraj Dolán works with various quotes and appropriations. He puts elements of prehistoric cultures into the context with creations of a contemporary man - its civilization features such as collage and scraps of newspaper, projection of contemporary documents onto paintings or objects of prehistoric iconography, using natural materials, especially sand, or man-made objects: barrels, cartridges, cabinets, carts, motor oil and so on. Distance that man has gone since the time when he chopped the first arrow-heads up to this day can be found in each installation. Materials used by the artist are not random, but semantically refer to the inner sense of creation. At first, sand was a part of paintings, objects and installations. In its fixed surface he imprinted or engraved shapes of prehistoric objects he found. His work of art proves that he thinks spatially and contextually in multiple planes. Each presentation, that is actually an installation, consists not only of new works, but also of older ones in the new context.
Contemplating the issues of existence in the modern world has a specific form in Juraj Dolán´s creation; he has made his own iconic symbols that are not just ironic game with symbols, on the contrary, the artist involves this repertoire in the reality of the today´s world.
Juraj Dolán was born in 1952 in Veľká Mača. Between 1977 and 1983 he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava, Department of Monumental Painting. He is one of those artists whose work is referred to as multimedia. In his work he engages not only in classical disciplines of painting and sculpture, but also focuses on creating objects, performances, multimedia projects and stage setting. In multimedia projects he uses visual elements and procedures as well as moving light and sound effects – photography, film, projection, dance and music.
In addition to that he takes part in art symposia at home and abroad /Mosonmagyaróvár - Hungary, Lendava - Slovenia, Corance - France/. He is also an active organizer of events like painting symposium for children in Topoľníky 1980-1994 and since 2003 also other international symposia.
