Although the group of painters BAnda formed „just“ last year, its formation has been brewing for some time. All its members come from the same studio of the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava where already the shared studio space may outline a future scenario. It sometimes happens already at school that those meet who find common ground and manage to withdraw from the bondage of school hours. Thus they offer the studio atmosphere to the public, who, in turn, tends to wait for what new brings the freshly emerging generation.

For over a decade the Slovak scene of painters is supplied with a new dose of young blood by the home studio of BAnda, i.e. the Fourth Studio of Painting at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava. Regularly, since 2000, by supplying the "fresh batch" of graduates it has been offering paintings based on generations themselves, hence on authentic attitudes and views. Today´s generation that picks up the traditional baton of hot news also wants to introduce its own story. And what does it bring? Above all, it does not suffer from the „handicap of painting“ as an obsolete and merely tolerated medium. Fortunately, in the last ten years painting has established itself on the contemporary art scene as an equal language besides „more fashionable“ digital media, which, until recently, seemed to be more suitable for the present scene than traditional painting.
Today´s painters do not need to convince that they belong to this world and it is up to each of them what language they choose and how to communicate with their audience.

Five painters of BAnda: Andrea Kopecká, Ján Hrčka, Jakub Hvězda, Filip Sabol and Michal Turkovič, some of them still the Forth Studio´s students, some already its graduates, are aware of this advantage and approach the painting as a language that provides them with attractive space for their own program and strategy. Unlike the generation of painters who ten years ago transferred the painting into the current discourse of art, the use of digital technologies is so natural for them that they do not need to force-demonstrate them in their pictures. They rather aim to rediscover the more traditional language of painting, whether in its characteristic physical level, the own expression of painting gestures, the ability to create an infinitive variety of spatial illusions or to simply catch us on the story in its typically figurative shortcut. Though BAnda is on the scene for less than one year, yet it managed to introduce itself in the SPP Gallery in Bratislava, Magna Gallery in Ostrava, Artatak Gallery in Prague, or in their recent exhibition project in the Ján Koniarek Gallery in Trnava. They always came out with a modified set of paintings in order to respond to and take into account the context in which they exhibit. They named their first exhibition just with their brand name BAnda and Ostrava they came out as if in the spirit of romantic promise „Present in the Old Medium“. They addressed Prague with a striking „P“ and came to Trnava with somewhat obscure name „Portioned“. Yet they only used the opportunity of the generous gallery space to exhibit together and at the same time each separately. Five halls offer space for separate collections for each of the exhibiting authors. As if during exhibition series the time has come to introduce themselves to the public as a compact individual whole and at the same time under the umbrella of a group safety. Let´s hope that one day we will be able to say that not only their youthful courage was the promise of the future. As their teacher, though teaching „only“ theoretical subjects, I am not afraid.
