At the end of this anniversary year, Jan Koniarek Gallery (GJK) in Trnava has prepared the exhibition titled The 40th Anniversary of GJK, which is composed exclusively of the collection of the gallery. The selection from works of artistic value presented in all exhibition spaces (from the entrance stairway to the ground floor of the extension) is a demonstration of research, acquisition and collection-creating activities of the gallery.

The temporary exhibition (five rooms on the first floor) is a selection of the acquisitions (i.e. additions to GJK collections) from the last ten years. The concept was created by the Director of GJK and professional staff. We tried - at least roughly - to classify the works into several blocks which individually communicate with each other. They are naturally very distinct and rather document individual genres and styles of art of the last two decades of the 20th century and the first fifteen years of the 21st century. Therefore, the exhibition has a character of a studio of free visual arts and has no particular curator. However, this constellation was taken into account in advance when planning the exhibition.

A brief summary of the exhibition: probably the widest area of the exhibition includes abstraction – the majority of the works is geometric, but some of them may be labelled structural and expressive abstraction. The styles which reached their prime in the post-war era of 1950s and 1960s found their successors in the generation which entered the art scene in 1980s and was creative in 1990s and 2000s. Another group is represented by the authors who develop post-conceptual art of 1990s in the following two decades. It mainly consists of reports of events, texts, light objects and installations. The third group is figural art which is probably the most understandable for ordinary visitor, since it is narrative: mostly characterized by image, scene and story which visitor can perceive. Videos are a separate group of the exhibition (including artistic films and performance records).

Overall, the exhibition presents three generations of artists. The basis of the selection consists of the works of the authors who introduced themselves this year at the exhibition in Landesgalerie Burgenland in Austrian town Eisenstadt. However, the exhibition is supplemented with other authors and the latest acquisitions of 2016.
