Trnava has a new art festival
Ján Koniarek Gallery under the acceleration of its activities and confirmation of the trend of successful projects beyond the borders of the region, prepared in November an initial year of the international action called Central European Art Festival Trnava 2008. The main idea of the festival is to bring an intermedia communication and confrontation of contemporary art mainly from Poland, Czech Republic, Austria, Hungary and Slovakia, in the fields of fine art, cinematography and music. The aim of the undertaking is to introduce actual culture of neighbouring and near countries from Central European cultural area to Slovak public and visitors of Trnava because their representation is minimal in current range of cultural spectrum.
Although the idea of November festivals of various genres in Slovakia is not a new (e.g. the Month of Photography, festival One World, International film festival in Bratislava), new undertaking under the gallery suspicious is attractive because it merges various genres of contemporary art in quality which will satisfy also demanding audience.
Festival line is created by international projects in both exhibition gallery spaces on which almost thirty artists from Central Europe and Russia were attended. Thanks to equivalent representation on the basis of nationality and common themes, both exhibitions allow to compare current fine art trends in Slovakia and in our neighbours. Exhibition in Trnava Synagogue called Video Reflex presents authors who are expressing by art medium of video. Nine artists using thirteen video projections by different way react on cultural, political or social problems of the contemporary world. In the Koppel villa artists confront their view on actual form of figural motives in contemporary art; form of hanging picture is dominating. Viewer will be attracted by creative innovations of classical form of the human body, as well as by wide spectrum of used techniques from classical painting by acrylic, through photomontage, spray, video, to combined installations. Both exhibitions will run till 14 December which is symbolic end of the whole festival.
Integrated character of a quality international undertaking is completed by wide range of films and concerts which present current top in the Central European area what is accompanied by many international awards of presented artists. Festival will offer many short alternative films from renowned directors (R. Polanski, A. Wajda) but also a spectrum of less known student projects which will be screened in the Koppel villa. Four strong days (19, 20, 26, 27 November) remain hit, during which eight feature-length films of Polish, Austrian, Czech and Hungarian production will be screened in the panoramic cinema Hviezda (Star). Quality “social documents” (Ztracená dovolená / Lost holiday), modern drama (Import/Export), known animated film for adults (Distrikt / District) or mysterious genre (Hukkle) will not be missed.
Audience could make certain of the quality of musical part of festival already on the concert of Austrian trio HDV in Synagogue last week. They were “forerunner” of the main opening of an initial year. Other concerts will take place in the annex building of the Koppel villa where various groups of jazz or chamber character mostly by young talented musicians of central Europe (holders of many awards or music scholarships) will be replaced. Variety of genres and attractiveness for different groups of viewers is guaranteed by classic old masters (Beethoven, Brahms) but also modern versions of jazz or funk. Except to the extend and type of used instruments presents unique meeting of thirty top Slovak folk musicians in Synagogue, called Starring “fujara”. Except to the extent and type of instruments used is a unique meeting of all the tips to nearly thirty Slovak folk musicians in the Synagogue, called the lead role fujara. Their Sunday performance can people see on 23 November at 7 p.m.
An initial year of the Central European Art Festival has just started and we can say that the ambience of periodic repetition and building-up a quality and number of presented artists make sense and has a chance to establish itself in the minds of general public.
It is also about strengthening the reputation of Trnava and Trnava region as a cultural environment not only with a rich historical and cultural tradition but also in the form of a strong and prosperous Euro region promoting and deepening cooperation in a wider cultural space.
